What do you do when you want something salty to snack on? You probably open up a bag of chips and start munching. Do those potato chips taste like a potato? How about the flavor of those tortilla chips? Any resemblance to cardboard? Do you know how easy it really is to make your own homemade chips? Well, it’s part 2 of our Try It Homemade series, and we’re making chips!
Baked Potato Chips
Take a look at the ingredient list on your bag of potato chips and tell me if there are more than 3 ingredients? Yes? Well there doesn’t have to be. All you need for your own homemade potato chips are potatoes, oil, and seasoning.
To make your own potato chips, start by preheating your oven to 450 degrees. Then, wash and scrub your potatoes, no need to peel. Slice the potatoes with a sharp knife or mandoline. I like to slice my potatoes to about 1/10 to 1/8 of an inch thick.
Then I brush a layer of oil on a sheet pan and sprinkle it with salt or whatever seasoning I’m using for flavor. Then lay out your slices in a single layer. Brush a thin layer of oil on the tops of the potato slices and add more seasoning.
Bake the potato slices in an 450 degree oven for 20-25 minutes. There’s no need to turn the potatoes during baking. Watch the potatoes the last few minutes because they could burn pretty quickly. And remember that the side of the potato slice that’s in contact with the sheet pan will be a little browner.
You can let the chips cool on paper towels to remove some of the oil. Then get out the dip and start snacking. Hmmm potato chips that actually taste like potatoes?!
Baked Tortilla Chips
Just like the potato chips, you only need three ingredients to make your own homemade tortilla chips.
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Cut your tortillas into the size of chips you want to make. I cut mine into 6 triangle pieces each. Then put the chips onto a cookie sheet and spray the chips with oil. Sprinkle on your choice of seasoning. Flip the chips over and spray and season again.
Bake them in the 425 degree oven for 10 minutes. Turn the chips over and bake for another 5-7 minutes. Watch them closely because they can burn before you know it. Believe me, I have experience in the burning of tortilla chips.
Once they are done, let them cool and eat up! Another way to make these is by sprinkling cinnamon and sugar on top before baking. Then you have a low calorie snack to satisfy your sweet tooth.
I like to make larger sized homemade tortilla chips, because they can really hold the toppings!
Baking homemade potato chips and tortilla chips is pretty easy. You can have the kids help by cutting the tortillas or brushing the oil on the potato slices. Nothing is more satisfying than eating something homemade.
